Free tool for Shopify stores
Free accessibility checker for Shopify stores
Paste your store's address. Our software opens your home page in a real browser, runs automated WCAG 2.2 A and AA tests, and lists the issues it finds, ranked by severity. It takes about a minute, with no sign-up and nothing to install. Paid reports add fix guidance.
We check your home page only. Password-protected stores can't be tested.
WideDoor is independent software and is not affiliated with Shopify.
What the free check looks at
- Images without a text description (alt text), so screen reader users don't know what a product photo shows.
- Text with too little color contrast, such as light gray text on a white background.
- Buttons and links with no name, such as an icon-only cart or search button.
- Form fields with no label, such as the newsletter sign-up or search box.
- Menus, sliders and pop-ups that use ARIA in a way assistive technology can't follow.
- Whether the page links to an accessibility statement and a way to contact you, and whether an overlay widget is installed.
Automated tests find only a portion of accessibility issues, and the free check covers your home page only. Paid reports test up to 5 or 20 pages, such as product, collection and cart pages (nothing is added to the cart).
Who fixes what on a Shopify store
Shopify
Shopify runs the checkout and the platform. It publishes accessibility conformance reports for its checkout (against WCAG 2.2 A/AA) and for an early version of its Dawn theme on its accessibility page.
Your theme
Menus, sliders, product galleries and focus outlines come from your theme's code. Shopify says merchants "have complete control over their theme codes" (Shopify's accessibility page). Updating to your theme's latest version is the first fix to try. Save a copy of any code edits first: Shopify carries them over only when they don't conflict with the update.
Your content
Alt text, colors, headings and link wording are yours. To add alt text: in your Shopify admin, open Products, click a product, click an image, click Add alt text, type a short description, then click Save alt text (Shopify's guide).
Your apps
Review widgets, pop-ups, chat bubbles and upsell apps add their own code to your pages. A store can fail checks its theme passes because of one app.
Is my Shopify theme accessible?
It depends on the theme, its version and what you've added to it. The same theme can behave differently once you upload your own images, change colors and install apps, so test your own store rather than the theme's demo.
What we will and won't say
- We never call a shop "compliant", and no software can make a shop lawsuit-proof.
- We don't sell overlay widgets, and we don't install anything on your store or change its code.
